Abstract
Since its introduction into the philosophical corpus of medieval scholasticism, the metaphor of reflection has undergone a process of transformation that has ultimately altered its original meaning. This development can be traced in the terminological dictionaries that record its usage from the beginning of the seventeenth century, which reveal a markedly psychologizing drift in the word that ends up obscuring its optical origin. The result is a highly impoverished and distorted use, in which the resistance to the conceptualization of the original metaphor is in some way revealed, making it necessary to reconsider the methodological restrictions (related to terminologized metaphors) that surround Blumenberg’s metaphorology.
