Abstract
«Artificial intelligence» is, above all, a confusing term. The article traces the historical use of intelligence and artificial—from Plato and Aristotle to Kant, Heidegger, and Simondon—arguing that artificial operates as a conjugate concept to natural, and that the label «AI» suffers from semantic inflation by conflating automation, simulation, and agency. Following Turing’s approach, the paper criticizes the shift toward an ontological question, which enables technical opacity and concentrations of power under the unifying name of «AI». This conflation of distinct analytical levels is exemplified by the case of «Sophia», which illustrates the ambiguity between legal personhood and moral subjecthood. The authors propose mapping the name, distinguishing technological families and replacing «AI» with Computer-Assisted Systems (CAS) and Autonomous Learning / Delegated Control Systems (ALS/CoDe), in order to clarify responsibilities, boundaries, and risks associated with autonomous learning or delegated control protocols.
