Abstract

Extract from the commentary of Jean-Luc Nancy: It is to be noted that the above-mentioned two characters are both authors and writers, one being a literary artist while the other a philosopher (nevertheless none of the two characters is free from an inclination towards the other field), one feminine and the other masculine (but of course none of the two characters is free from an inclination towards the other). It all begins with a play that presents the following scene : a male character breaks into a temple where the mystery of a conception is staged. His penetration leaves him with a vague repulsion that soon turns into an appeasement. This modification is seen in the rupture of the syntax: “But as soon as he enters/and he sees the bottom.” The role of “and,” lingering between its role as a conjunction and an exclamation shall call for our attention.
