Abstract

In this essay, we seek to reflect on three perspectives of contemporary political philosophy that share the attempt to think the common beyond identity and exclusion in the framework of neoliberal capitalism. Firstly, we examine the impolitical perspectives that have recovered and deconstructed the notion of community, rethinking the common in an ontological and impolitical way. Then, we analyze two perspectives that take into account the struggles around common goods in the last decades, providing a political inflection to the thought on the common. Therefore, we delve into Hardt and Negri’s attempt to think an ontology of the common that stems from what they define as biopolitical production (and exploitation) and the constituent power of the multitudes, and, later, into Dardot and Laval’s intention to think the common in terms of institutive praxis and co-obligation among those who take part of a joint activity. In that context, recovering the critiques that the French authors make to impolitical ontologies of the common, we close the article with an attempt to reappraise the impolitical ontologies of being-with in order to think a politics of the common.
