Abstract
Migration represents the main challenge for global society, both in terms of its dimensions and its causes. We need new solutions to the crisis that incorporate moral philosophy and a culture of welcome, as previous liberal or quantitative proposals have failed. To this end, we analyse Bauman's thought because it brings together the experience of exile and a humanist sociological reflection that is close to philosophy. We highlight the importance of Bauman's exile experience, as it shapes his perspective on strangers. Then, we review his criticism of attitudes of indifference or social rejection of migrants. And finally, we focus in his proposal to create an ethical culture, which he identifies with a culture of welcoming and integrating strangers. Bauman's proposals are not political or immediate. They aim to encourage responsible citizens to demand welcoming measures from their government.
