Abstract
Two senses of the term conscience have coexisted since we have evidence of its use: the psychic and the moral. A distinctive feature of modern thought consists in considering that the first has to prevail over the second. However, the very evolution of the concept seems to require in our days an appeal to the social to complete its determination.
