Abstract
This paper defines the rhetorical term ekfrasis, from its origin in the description of the shield of Aquilles realised by Homero in the Iliad to its use at present. It tries to reveal the formal constituents of a ekfrasis, the ekfrastic markers, proposing as example the description of the shield of Eneas in Aeneidos by Virgil.
