Abstract
In 1929, the famous meeting between Ernst Cassirer and Martin Heidegger took place in Davos, Switzerland, which dramatically underlines the duel between the two prevailing philosophical currents in the German-speaking world at that time, while pointing out, in its own resolution, to the immediate political horizon looming over Europe, with the usual mitmachen of the university world and of a vast majority of it sintellectuals, enthusiastically prone to burning books, thereby resembling good priests and barbers drawn from Cervantes.
Exactly four centuries before, Luther and Zwingli (among others) argued, in the so-called Marburg Colloquy, about the sacrament of the Eucharist, adopting irreconcilable positions on the question of the real presence of the body of Christ in it.
The present paper intends to show the structural identity between the Davos discussion and the Marburg Colloquy, revealing the theological dimension pervading them, which ought to have an enormous impact on the future development of disciplines such as linguistics, no matter how oblivious of the fact past and present actors might be.
