Abstract
In this paper, I deal with the theoretical
conceptions of Georges Bataille and Ernesto
Laclau based on their similar emphasis on the
need to think the social order not as a mere
symbolic structure, but also affective, being the
jouissance -impossible and yet operating- what
give shape to that social order.
In this regard, particularly, we delve into the
place that each of these authors give to the
concept of heterogeneity -after having
explained the role conferred on jouissance- as
well as into the ways in which they conceive
the joint between the heterogeneous and the
social order. Laclau himself mentions at the
end of the fifth chapter of The populist reason,
that
his analysis of heterogeneity finds
matching points with Bataillean conception.
However, in this work, while we recognize
points of contact between the two theories, we
will concentrate instead on their differences,
describing the particularities of each version
and their disparate potentialities. For that
purpose, we reconstruct the ways in which
Bataille and Laclau have appropriated the
Freudian and the Lacanian legacies.
