Abstract
In his conception of sympathy Hume broke from his peers by providing a very specialview of this phenomenon, not as affection or feeling, but as a factor and condition for the communicability of affects. Sympathy, far from being based on a moral trait of human nature or on the recognition of similarity and proximity, appears rather as a factor that generatesidentity and emotions, the basis for the constitution of the subjective and the intersubjective.
