Abstract

The text develops a relatively new literary genre: In reaction to some of the most brilliant aphorisms written in the last decades, those by the Colombian philosopher and writer Nicolas Gomez Davila, the author proposes counter-aphorisms that oppose them, variations that slightly alter them, and corollaries that infer consequences from them. In doing so, he offers a picture of modernity's predicament that is influenced by Gomez Davila in rejecting its vulgar features but remains stubbornly committed to a rationalist interpretation of religion and a universalist ethics.
