Abstract
What is really given when we say “giving place”? Could we say “delivering place”? What is given, then, in architecture? A gift?
In Spanish (unlike English) “dar lugar” (“giving place”) has at least two meanings. On the one hand it means something such to produce, or to lead (in)to (as the sequential order in which one state of things leads to another). On the other hand, considering the literal meaning of the words, “dar lugar” means “(to) give place”, “(to) deliver place”, even “(to) produce place”. What is, then, this place that is given? What means, in this context, “giving”? Giving what? A gift?
Two complementary aspects of this question will be explored in the article: the question of giving as gift and the question of place as appearing of architecture and space. The two aspects will be examined through a perspective that puts in relation Jean-‐‑Luc Marion’s phenomenology with Derrida’s deconstruction, framed by the general context of architecture.
