Abstract

The review examines Dust and certainty, in which Felipe Martínez Marzoa explores modernity through the concept of the «one-all». After placing the book within his hermeneutic project on the history of philosophy, it explains how modern certainty entails the de-qualification of beings and the absence of privileged connections. The discussion focuses especially on Spinoza, whose substance, structure, and theory of conatus are linked to ontological and political problems, while also addressing Kant, Marx, and civil society. The final assessment praises Marzoa’s argumentative rigour, but criticizes the increasing terseness of his writing and the resulting difficulty that his recent works pose, particularly for new readers.
