Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to problematize

the concept of biopolíticas drawing on Michel

Foucault and postfoucauldian reflection. In

order to develop this approach and understand

the meaning of biopolitics, the text departs

from the relation between philosophy and

present in Foucauldian thinking.

Subsequently, it poses a series of questions

about the paradoxical economy of relations

between Bios and Thánatos and its dissimilar

interpretations by M. Foucault, G. Agamben

and R. Esposito. Afterwards the text explores

the linkages between biopolitics, racism and

immunization dispositifs. It proposes that both

dispositifs are part of a biopolitical diagram

although the foucauldian concept of biopolitics

cannot be reduced to them. Hence, it suggests

the following hypothesis: biopolitics and the

notion of life itself cannot be understood

without taking into account the emergence of

the concept of “population” and multiple

mechanisms of “security”. Only in these

mechanisms it is possible to recognize the

paradoxical structure of the biopolitics.
