Abstract
The American philosopher Richard Rorty encourages a
philosophy of contingency as a means of accepting a world
without essences. Accordingly, Philosophy must substitute
hope for knowledge and accept we live in a complex,
multicultural world with no possibilities of finding
universal, intercultural values. We have to trust in that the
future will be better than the past. Therefore, the role of
Philosophy is closer to Literature than to Science. The new
posphilosophy abandons its objective of being a solution to
the crisis of reason but it tries instead to supersede
Modernity and become whatRorty calls the neopragmatism.
This implies two different attitudes: the assumption of
contingency and the rebuilt of the modern moral agent as a
liberal-‐‑ironist self. For Rorty, the pragmatism means the
final stage of the Enlightment —thought from a different
point of view, as the result of two traditions of modern
philosophy: the Romanticism and the Analytic Philosophy.
