Abstract
The beginning of the path of reason goes back to the greek philosophers, it continous with medieval thinkers and takes fresh impetus in the Renaissance, the modern worl and the Enlightenment. Since its birth in the house of reason there are disturbances which hamper progress. Bayle and Rousseau are two models to consider. One lucidly discovered the vulnerability of the same reason in the preambles of the Enlightenment. The other dared to criticize, since the Enlightenment, scientific and technical advances because they didn’t drive to moral development. Since the Romantic movement of the nineteenth century there is a real comparison, which the stormy culture of the XX century intensifies, questioning important illustrated ideals that, despite the challenges, seem to no longer return.
