Biología sistémica y filosofía de la naturaleza

Abstract

In biology, the reductionist approach has been prevalent during the second half of the twentieth century. Thanks to it, we have known great scientific achievements. But its limitations have also emerged. The HGP was guided by this approach. It was a great scientific success. However, it was also frustrating in some way. The reason for this paradox is to be found in the excessive expectations placed on it. This situation has led to a revolution in post‐genomic biology. Currently biology is moving away from the excesses of reductionism, and approaching a more systemic stance. In this spirit Systems Biology (SB) was born. We are right now beginning to explore the philosophical consequences of all these events. The present text is intended as a modest contribution to this task. From my point of view, the SB affects several main issues of philosophy of nature. It forces us to revisit notions such as those of system, complexity, organization and function. It affects the debate about the ontology and axiology of living beings, about reductionism and holism. It modifies also the debate on causation, on determinism, chance and freedom. It has to do as well with the distinction between being and genesis, with the discussion on the philosophical significance of evolution.
