Resumen
Los periodistas suelen enmarcar el "campo de la Selva de Calais" en la frontera franco-británica como criminal, sin ley y caótico en oposición a la sociedad civilizada (europea). Sin embargo, se puede detectar al menos un segundo eje de representación mediática: el de encuadrar el campo como ciudad. Este estudio pretende mostrar hasta qué punto el campamento informal puede de hecho ser considerado una ciudad. En primer lugar, se analizan dos artículos de prensa, publicados en 2015 por el diario británico Daily Mail Online. Luego, se revisan las teorías relevantes sobre la urbanidad y los campamentos de refugiados. Al contrastar la Selva con otros campos de refugiados y la teoría urbana, el estudio concluye que, si bien la selva se asemeja a una ciudad en sus diversas actividades económicas y población heterogénea, no puede considerarse urbana. Para ser considerado una ciudad, el campamento debe cumplir con criterios como áreas públicas y privadas separadas, desarrollo permanente planificado, alguna forma de administración y posibilidades de participación democrática de los habitantes. Se concluye así que la selva es un hors-lieu en lugar de una ciudad funcional. Por último, se hace evidente que el grado de urbanidad que puede evolucionar dentro de un campo depende en gran medida de su condición jurídica y de sus condiciones contextuales.
